Like gagansgrl, I was a surfer too -- but I'm talking 30 years ago here!! We especially used "gnarly" to talk about big surf (waves) or a hairy wipeout. Same thing when we'd have a bad accident with the skateboard. The resulting injuries were also considered to be "gnarly". LOL

It's a surfer term, mostly, and it changes depending on context. It can mean something very difficult to do (a gnarly curve to get around), or something bad (gnarly problem).

Originated from the word gnarled.
2)adjective; used to describe anything really far out and amazing, not necessarily lovely; an extraordinary stunt, or event. Also, onomatopoeia.
3)grotesque, yet awesome
go to the site for more... I can't post them here because of the obscenities.

It means a knot on the trunk of a tree or twisted branch of a tree. It later became a common phrase as "gnarly dude", which meant that something was twisted.

I think it kinda is double sided. One means aggresive and ferocious, snappy etc. the other is surfer slang saying something is cool.
