Like gagansgrl, I was a surfer too -- but I'm talking 30 years ago here!! We especially used "gnarly" to talk about big surf (waves) or a hairy wipeout. Same thing when we'd have a bad accident with the skateboard. The resulting injuries were also considered to be "gnarly". LOL

It's a surfer term, mostly, and it changes depending on context. It can mean something very difficult to do (a gnarly curve to get around), or something bad (gnarly problem).

I think it kinda is double sided. One means aggresive and ferocious, snappy etc. the other is surfer slang saying something is cool.
