Even simpler than a frosting is a glaze. I got two glazes and a frosting for you off the top of my head...
- Mix some confectioner's sugar with a little water or milk, add a little liquid at first and then keep on adding both liquid and sugar until it's your desired consistency. You can add a bit of vegetable coloring and a flavoring of some sort if you wish. This you glaze over the cake... voilá!
- Even easier and (in my opinion) better, get three or four (or heck, five if you got a sweet tooth) Snickers or Milky Way Bars. Cut them up in small pieces and put them over a double boiler. Keep stirring. Meanwhile, poke the top of your cake with a skewer. When the chocolates are all melted, add the tiniest splash of milk and stir VERY WELL until it's incorporated, you should feel the mixture get "runnier", let it cool for a bit, then pour the mixture (it should still be warm) over the cake. If you want, you can garnish with additional nuts, chocolate chips, etc.
- Mix together a large block of cream cheese (8 oz), a stick of butter and when it's all creamy and combined, add a cup of sugar (either granulated for an old-fashioned feel or sifted confectioner's sugar). If you want a softer frosting, add more butter or cheese, if you want a firmer frosting, add more sugar.
Either of these are REALLY good... and even though very easy, NOT Betty Crocker!
Good luck!

This is the classic Wilton's Buttercreme Frosting
4 cups sifted confectioners sugar
1 stick of butter
1/2 cup Crisco shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
2 TBS. milk
With a mixer, blend butter, vanilla and Crisco until smooth. Sift and measure sugar. I use a fine strainer and force the sugar through with a spoon (works great!). Pour sugar into butter mixture a little at a time, beating on medium speed until blended. When completed frosting will be dry. Add 2 TBS. of milk and blend again on medium speed until mixed thoroughly.
If you like a lighter frosting just beat the frosting a little long and it fluff's right up.
Makes enough for a two layer cake or 4 doz. cupcakes.

Buttercream frosting
• 3 1/2 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
• 1 cup unsalted softened butter, margerine (but it'll be yellowish if yellow), or shortening
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
• 2-4 tbsp. milk
Directions:
1: Beat everything but the milk together on low.
2: Add in the milk bit by bit until desired consistancy.
Additional Tips:
If you plan to use it for piping, use less milk for stiffness. Add 1 pkg. instant chocolate pudding mix or/and some cocoa for chocolate frosting add any extracts that you like.

Confectioner's sugar and a liquid--this can either be milk, water, lemon juice or whatever. Also, with a simple vanilla cake, adding lemon zest would be good in the frosting. You can pretty much just eyeball the recipe--just add confectioner's sugar and add water until it's thing and you can drizzle it. Oh, and this will harden once it dries. Also, add some food colouring to make it pretty :)

My mom used to make an awesome frosting that was really easy.
1 box powdered sugar
1 stick butter or margarine, really softened
coffee
water
Mix the powdered sugar and soft butter together, add coffee till right consistency. If you think you have added too much coffee, and still need more liquid, add water.
That simple, and it is awesome - especially on a chocolate cake.
