My personal choice, Chihauhua and Pug, Pugs are the best they are sweet and loving, they only thing I don't like about mine is he doesn't realize how big he is and sleeps on my stomach making it hard for me to breath at times because of his weight.

AKC = American Kennel Club, the longest existing breed registry and promoter of canine performance in the US and the internationally designated record keeper of pedigree, show and performanace records. Think Wstminster Dog Show on TC - the penultimate show.

http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm?nav_area=breeds

On the AKC web page for a specific breed follow the links that say "Breed Club" and the club's website will tell you even more about each breed..

"Best" is a relative term. "Best" for what? Living in the country? Living in an apartment? Highly active and wanting to play and go and hike with you? A couch potato who wants to cuddle? An easy going personality? A strong watchful personailty who will let you know when someone is there? Tolerant of children and of what age? Do you mind vaccumming (long hair) or buying coats and sweaters for winter (many short hair)? What do you define as small/medium? One that is less than 15 inches at the shoulder and less than 20 lbs? One that is less than 20 inches at the shoulder? Under 30, 40, 50 lbs?

Read about all the different breeds to help you decide and talk to the breeders of those dogs (see the breed club website for breeder contacts.).

Even if you decide to adopt a mixed breed, at least you will know what the likely size and personality of an australian shepard/poodle would be.

In addition, definitley consider adopting an older dog - either a mixed bred or a purebreed if you find a breed with which you fall in love.

All the clubs for different breeds have a breed rescue where they rehome dogs of their breed. They are very careful to place the right dog with the right family; and spend time getting to know the dogs in their charge in great detail.

You can get to the Rescue for that breed from the same AKC webpage for the breed. It is in the left hand column marked "Breed Rescue"

Good luck

By the way, ignore the poster above - there is no such breed as "dotson"

When my children were small, we had a Shih Tzu. She was a great dog and so patient with the kids..she put up with lots of teasing and tail pulling. (She was actually our first "baby!") The American Kennel Club website is great...all breeds are listed and they give lots of info on what's best for your lifestyle. For instance, if you live in an apartment, they suggest breeds that would fit that environment as far as walking and exercising is concerned. It's very informative, and will also give you info on their temperaments, how much time it takes for their coat care, etc.

Dotson, or commonly known as the hot dog. It is cute, lovable, and has great personality. Only downside is that overweight dotsons hounds will develope a spine disorder. So keep em fit and healthly.

Pugs are good. My pug loves all ages of children. She is very easy with babies. She just wants to smell and lick them. After she smells the baby she goes on. They are very playful and smart.
