Keep the plants off the floor where they are easialy accesible to the kitten. Maybe try keeping the cat food by the litter box so it can get used to where the location is. Maybe try a different brand of cat litter, if worse comes to worse.

I like what most of the others have written because their suggestions helped me with my cat! She wasn't using the plants as a litterbox but as a source of salad greens.
There are many excellent "cat repellant" sprays on the market and, as many others have said, they do not hurt cats or plants. The ingredients in these sprays are all what are called "bitters".
If you don't want to go that route, try smearing some vaseline petroleum jelly on the rim of the planters and then sprinkling a bit of cayenne pepper (lemon pepper works equally well).
Then, take your kitty to his box and gently hold his front paws and have him "demonstrate" his scratching inside the box.

Put the plants in a location that your kitten cannot get to.
Or put rocks on top of the soil in the pots. That way it does not look like a litter box.
Your kitten was probably outside before you adopted him or her.
Take care,
Troy

Easy question. Set a mouse trap in each potted plant, or set some in the garden area where you cat "goes". Set the trap but don't bait it. It wouln't hurt your cat other than smacking it. After one time, your cat will not go where there are traps. After it catches on you will not need to "set" the traps just leave them in the the planters. You'll be able to completely remove the traps after a while.
