I think that the Western media does portray radical Islam as mainstream. Many in the USA do not understand that the majority of Muslims live ordinary lives just like we do. They also do not understand that Islam is the world fastest growing religion. The fastest growing religion in the USA and the second largest religion in terms of numbers in both Great Britain and France.
And these people are not terrorists, radicals or anything other than ordinary people living ordinary lives. I think also that the media tends to sensationalize the radicals for the sake of ratings. When McVey blew up the federal building did you hear what religion he was? I didn't. When someone goes crazy and shoots a bunch of people they never state his religion. But let that person be a Muslim and suddenly he is a terrorist. Any time a Muslim does anything, it does not matter if it is related to the religion, terrorism or just that he was mad, it makes the news. The same cannot be said of any other religion. We don't think of Catholics as terrorists now because of the actions of the IRA.
It is only Muslims that make the news and every thing that happens in the world is initially blamed on Muslims until it is proven different. Or someone comes on and says This is not an act by Muslim terrorists. But what most people hear is only Muslim terrorists and not the this is not part.

It is hard to know whats the real, or mainstream Islam. Everyone has a different take on it. When you see a person being forced to convert by the knife its a big turn off. Who knows, just seems its a religion to be avoided. If the mainstream is truly peaceful then why don't the peaceful ones stand up and condemn the radical?

sulfur_and_mercury,
It's a blight upon the Earth. If even there was good reason to suspect a group, it would be now against Islam. Even those who do not claim to be radical, do everything BUT condemn the radicals. It has been that way for too long. There is no outspoken and capable group of Muslims that are coming against Islamic radicals, that tells me that they are not good people, and that they are not trustworthy, and that they are just going to keep trying to kill us. And when you look at Mohammed, you see why. He was a violent thief. And so that's what we expect. We can forgive as a nation, have done it before. But the Muslims are constantly attempting to placate the victims, just what an evil religion might do before they strike again.
I will not fall for it.

It may be very difficult to tell the difference if one does not know what true Islam teaches.
You can't blame people for thinking that Islam is evil when all we see, hear and read about Islam is evil.
I think US TV is generally sympathetic to Muslims..they show the news but don't really condemn Muslims.
However, I think the greatest harm to Islam is portrayed on radio shows by hosts like Michael Savage..on the Savage Nation. Rush Limbard and Michael Reagan; they all portray all Muslims as fanatics.
Our duty as true Muslims is not only to say we are peaceful but demonstrate it. Many Muslims here...on this Yahoo Chat do not demonstrate that they condemn the evil Muslim Fanatics. It's only when we condemn the sins of our evil brothers will we be able to demonstrate our way of peace.

If you study, Mohammad, and mainstream Islam you will find it extremely radical. Islam will not work in a free society. Read "Islam Revealed" by Dr Annis Shorrosh. He was born and raised in Palestine. He should know. Islam is not good in any way.

I think Islam is a very evil cult which turns people into monsters. I have yet to hear a single Muslim denouncing the bombings and beheadings carried out in the name of Islam.

I agree with Girl Wonder (above).
The US media depicts extremist Muslims as being mainstream...
Funny how there was no condemnation by the US media of Catholicism during the IRA era...
