America, being that it has no official language, does have many ESl personel in the education field. Because of the large amounts of immigrants along the Mexican border, they have bilingual schools. I'm not sure if this is done with any other language. I don't think Americans should pay to have a bilingual education system, but they should definately have enough ESL teachers and classes to support all the students who need it. To say that because English is the main spoken language and no other language is needed to be known is stupid. America prides itself on its multiethnic background and it shouldn't enforce just one language on the many cultures.

It is not that more bilinguals come to US because of their bilingual characteristics but because they come through a quota system. If they took only good English speaking ones then all of them would have been from UK or the Commonwealth countries. Others would have been left out. Those who come there do come with adequate skills other than language skills which can be implanted in the American system. Students do learn from Americans, professionals learn the American way, culture etc; and remain rooted there for the rest of their good life. They do consume a lot more than they do in their home countries, cars, homes etc; which aids in growing the Economy. If statistics can be believed 3 mn foreginers land in the US every year. This is 3 mn new homes and 3mn more consumers for the American Economy and the Manufacturing to project their wares at. It is not language that matters it is their input to the the whole American system. Good luck. Qui est langue pour connaitre

Ok, America has no official language...
But bec we do have so many languages being spoken, we need a common groud and focal point. Having different schools being conducted in different languages only promotes segregation, and thats counter productive to everything everyone (well, not EVERYONE) has worked for all these years.
The reason we need bilingual personnel is bec majority of the jobs that require a second language are consumer/ sales related. And if you're trying to sell something to someone, you need to reach them on a very comfortable/ relative level. If I'm more comfortable in Spanish, I'm more likely to respond to advertising marketed toward me in my comfort zone. Kind of like how Boost Mobile was marketed directly at blacks, and it worked...

we have huge groups of many nationalities that don't speak american english. only the Mexico border issues bring out one group.
it would be hard to accommodate all.
many tourists immigrants and long time citizens don't speak english. AND WE NEED TO CONVERSE WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD.
not every one can easily learn a new language.
english is the second most difficult language to learn.
some immigrants from that war Vietnamese immigrants still cant get it..
most areas with large populations of immigrants or foreign tourists Chinatowns, little Italy, little Saigon, old areas used to be Mexico have persons who know little or no english.
most other countries teach their young more than one language as a requirement early when its easy.
we are still far behind the times.

Because the official language of the United States is English. As a taxpayer, I can assure you we are spending plenty to educate children whose native tongue is NOT English as well. However, this is still the Melting Pot, and people come from all over the world to live here. Thus, we need translators for all those people who come to the United States to live without knowing enough of the Official Language to be able to function... We also need translators for all of the wonderful foreign goods we import and all of the foreign workers and dignitaries who come here to enjoy our very generous hospitality.
Y por eso, recuerdo que norteamericanos viajen en rebaños. Si no me gusta sus preguntas, entonces no es importante si siento igual.

First of all, students in the USA can't learn to write & speak English properly, how would you expect them to learn multiple languages. Secondly, how would you choose a second language to teach. Choose Spanish and Chinese are mad and vice versa. Public Education in the USA should be taught in Enflish only.
