Yawning is due to lack of oxygen to the brain. It is ment to clear all the carbon dioxide from bronchiols in the lungs. Thus making them open for oxygen enriched air.

Actually its not a lack of oxygen that causes you to yawn. Its an excess of carbon dioxide.
As an aside, its not a lack of oxygen that triggers the need to breathe, but a build up of our old friend CO2

Cause when we're tired, our brains are lacking oxygen so it's instinctive to suck in some air by yawning. Natures little way of telling us what's going on in our bods.

I had always heard that it was a mechanism for increasing oxygen supply to the brain, but I'm not sure anyone knows for sure...
