From ME!! I've been teaching English for 20 years now, so here are some suggestions:

For a descriptive essay, try to use any and all of the five senses that LOGICALLY apply to your topic. In other words, if you were writing a descriptive essay about your dog, you wouldn't include too many "taste" words!!! (eeeuuuuuwwwwww).
In fact, that could be one way to arrange the essay - by the senses.
Or you could break it down into sections to describe. If you are describing a place (such as your favorite spot in the woods or your favorite restaurant or your teenager's stinky bedroom), you would do it spatially - start at one point and work your way around, using descriptive words as you go.
The whole idea of a descriptive essay is to get the reader to see (and smell and hear, etc.) things the way you do. Keep that in mind and don't over do it.
Remember when using descriptive words to be creative - use a thesaurus, but don't use words that you don't already know and use. It has to sound like YOU, not a thesaurus!
Instead of saying, "The furnace in the basement makes weird noises when it comes on" say "When the ancient furnace comes on, it rumbles and belches like King Henry VIII after an eight course meal."
Using similes like that (comparing two things using the words "like" or "as") is a good way to describe - link something unknown to the reader (what you are describing) to something they know about when you compare.
Hope this helps
