Hi,
Well, West New York is closest to New York City, proximity wise, and West New York is smaller an area than North Bergen, which surrounds it on 2 sides, more or less. West New York is more "city" than North Bergen, which in some areas can still be a bit more suburban. The same diverse ethnic groups live in both areas. If you will be working in NYC, either city has loads of buses or vans to go back and forth.
One thing, from North Bergen it's easier to get to the NJ Turnpike, so if you plan to visit Baltimore often, you'd probably appreciate that. If you're in West New York, you either have to hightail it up to the NJ Turnpike Extension or drive south to the Rutherford area, but if you're already in North Bergen, you can get on it from the LIncoln Tunnel/Rutherford area.
If you don't have to limit yourself to these two choices, look at other options like Secaucus, Guttenberg, Jersey City, Hoboken, Lodi, Fort Lee, etc.
I used to live in Union City, but had (and have) family and friends in both North Bergen and West New York.
Good luck,
Barb

Either really are good. I live in West New York and like that I can go right down the hill to the light rail and the ferry to NYC. Either way, try to get a place near either Kennedy Blvd. or Bergenline Ave. ... lots of shops and good restaurants!!
