i didnt know if the whole idea that the last male of a family is not to be in a combat situation (a la "Saving Private Ryan"), or if there are any other circumstances under which military members are kept stateside during times of war. (please dont bother answering unless you know for sure, and documentation is always appreciated.)

Pregnancy is only a way to stay home if it's a female soldier who's pregnant (ex SIL did it just to get out of deployment). If you're due before a certain point during the deployment, they can still make you go as early as 6 wks after delivery. If a wife is pregnant, soldier gets deployed regardless (Living proof of that one). If the soldier is getting out of the service on medical reasons, they'll keep him/her home (former neighbor). If something is wrong with you and they're not letting you out yet, but they can't figure it out and it would effect your performance in battle, you stay home (guy in hubby's platoon right now has headaches and vision problems that they can't figure out). There's also a guy in my husband's platoon that stayed back because he's getting a compassionate reassignment to a base in the states (we're in Germany right now) for some serious family issues that require programs not available here. I don't have documentation on the regulations, and I've heard of others, but these are ones I've seen for myself.

My husband is a medic in the army and just deployed. There are very few reasons a person doesn't deploy now. I know of several single child families whose sons/daughters are deployed. I also know several families where the mother and father are deployed, the children generally stay with another family member. If there isn't a family member available one parent is kicked out of the military. Pregnancy is one reason for non-deployment however when the child is four months old the mother is sent. There are medical reasons for non-deployment however they must be very serious to even be considered and your chain of command can override the doctors orders and in that case you would deploy anyway.

Dental problems will prevent you from being deployed. No family care plan if you are a parent, but in this case you will be chaptered out of the military. If you are within 30days of transfer, ETS with no remaining reserve service or retirement you can't get deployed unless you volunteer to extend. Insofar as finances you have to be in pretty dire straights financially not to be deployed. Again, you will probably be involuntarily separated from the military. Also, certain codes on your PULHES will cause you to be non-deployable but remain on active duty.

Pregnancy is one. The last of the line in the family no longer applies since the military was made voluntary. Actually bad finance are also a factor making military non deploy-able. Military believes it might make them not only to distracted by state side problems but also more susceptible to bribery.

That , carry on the last name, nonsense is just that, nonsense! There are thousands of guys out there who represent the last of their families. They don't get special dispensation because of it.

In the case of Pvt. Ryan, that was a direct order from George Marshall, because he believed the Ryan family had sacrificed quite enough after having lost four of their five sons in wartime.

Poor health is about the only effective way to avoid deployment!

My cousin recently got out of going back to Iraq because being there the first time has made him go insane. He's currently hospitalized. If you have a physical or mental ailment that can cause harm to you or anyone else, they can't send you.

if you have a reason for not deploying other than pregnancy, chances are it's also something that will get you chaptered out.

In my former unit in the 82d Airborne, we didn't treat people who had "got out" of deploying very nicely, especially since all of us had multiple tours...
