this sounds very much like bi-polar disorder (or what was known as manic depressive) but I am no expert!
if i were you, i would visit my GP and demand to see a mental health worker/psychiatrist where your condition can be properly disgnosed and you can get the help you need. its unfair that youve had to cope all this time with a problem that you cannot identify. with the right help, im sure you will feel loads better about your life.
Best of Luck!

I have exactly the same problem with depression as centipede. I have never told my GP about it untill recently, and he recomended some councilling which i have just started. Personally i would never take anti deppresants, because i dont think they would help and it sounds like they arent helping you. Maybe it is time you tried something different....17 years is a long time....Hope you can find something that works...Good Luck.

Have you ever thought maybe you have S.A.D syndrome, Seasonal Affective Dissorder...
Basically it comnes down to the ammoiunt of rays you get from the sun, as the night draw in you get more tired and depressed, it like you go into hybernation mode...there is treatment for it, you just need to sit under ultra violet light for a few hours a day and bingo back to normal.
check out this site it might help

Hope it helps....

i am not a doctor, but, maybe you are truly bi-polar instead of depressed. i have heard of many people getting mis-diagnosed---they were diagnosed with depression, but instead, they were really bi-polar.
i know this is hard, but try to get a shrink. a shrink will be able to say what exactly is going on. best of luck :)

Go back to your doctor, ask to be referred to a psychiatrist, it may be bi-polar disorder, or something else, only a specialist will know.
Have you tried counselling it can really help.

who is your doctor? i think that it is completely absurd for you to be on medication for 17 years and still be having problems. you should find a new doctor. where do you live? i may be able to help
