No, honey. The word did not get hijacked. And most Christians know what messiah means. I don't think any believe it to mean anything other than what it does. Most of us read the Bible and understand it.
But you are correct. The Jews were expecting a king. Someone to pull them out of exile. Someone to rain justice down. Someone to smite their enemies. Someone to restore Jerusalem.
Jesus did not fit their bill for the messiah - which means anointed. Christos is the Greek word for anointed. One anoints a king.
This is why so many of the Jews did not accept Jesus. He preached peace and love. And coexistance with the Gentiles whom the Jews hated.
Many couldn't fathom that. So they could not follow him.
But some were able to see the Truth of Him. "I am the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIGHT."

Jesus is the ONLY begotten Son of God. This means he is not just a great man, human leader or human king. Of course, you cannot understand who He really is until you actually meet Him and accept Him and what He did for you personally. If you ever receive Him and the Holy Spirit, you will then be able to understand these things...until then, you'll just be trying to figure it out by your own understanding which is very lacking without the Holy Spirit. The Bible says these things are "spiritually" discerned and can't be known just with the mind.

The Messiah is the promised deliverer of the Jewish people.
The definition doesn't go much deeper than that. Who the Messiah is, is a question open for interpretation. That's why Jews and Christians don't agree.

Messiah simply means anointed king.
Jesus was the expected anointed one.
There's no hijacking; the Jews din't understand the virtue of the Messiah, they were looking for a warlord to free them from their oppressors. The kingdom of the Messiah was not of this world.

Actually, that sounds more like the antichrist. People will revere him as such, anyway.
