This is from a document that says that "only 3% of the population actually enjoys selling but most people love to shop". Although I think that lots of people love to shop, I hate to have statements that include statistics just pulled out of the air (a lie in other words) so is there some sort of way I can find out where they get this from without asking them?

Statistics can be extrapolated from anything. Show me a statistic that says one thing, I'll show you one that says the complete opposite.

Validate? I doubt it.

I'm not a salesperson but work closely with them.

I'd guess that only 3% of high school grads have a sales career in mind. Society classifies them in the fields of automobiles and insurance sales. Who sells 50 Boeing jets to a Chinese airline? How about that vacuum cleaner you just bought at Wal*Mart. Chances are that they're very smart talented people who are making big bucks.

It's a great career if you like people, are smart and have a spine. I think sales ranks only behind doctors and lawyers as far as pay goes.

Sounds like someone is going to have to do a rather in depth sampling to get an idea of what that facts are. You may consider secondary information to guide you in your venture to find your answer.
