Not sure but i've noticed that when I get my hair done a brighter red than my natural red, the dye that comes out (before they put it on my hair) mixed together is purple. Must be something to do with the colors that they put together.

purple ahir dye is only ever semi permanent - i use them all the time, you need to bleach the hair firts, but the semi colours fade out real fast to lilac so be prepared for lots of upkeep - every week or 2 depending how often you wash your hair!!
stargazer , manic panic and directions have some cool purples :D or try this site

You wont get purple unless you bleach you hair really white beforehand . Is ending up red because of the colour yellow in the blond.

Manic Panic...there really are no 'permanent ' purple hair dyes...all permanent dyes that look purple are actually voilet red, or VR in color terms..

Try leaving it in longer, it may have to do with also that your hair color is too light or dark for that particular dye. And I'm sorry, but the only purple dyes I know of are semi-premanent and have to purchased at your salon..

Depending on your natural hair colour, a good one to go for is the "LIVE" XXXL COLOUR range, you can get this for about £5 from boots, superdrug, tesco etc.
Give it a go !!

Probably best to go to a salon and get it done. There are usually salons that specialise in doing creative colouring.
