I hate the south. It's hot, humid, and closed minded. I grew up in CA but it's too expensive to move back. I need a cooler climate, good schools, jobs, diversity, tolerance, and family fun. Where should I start looking. All confederate states are out of the question.

I've lived lots of places around the country, and if you want a cooler climate, the midwest and even east coast have all the other things you're after. I grew up in upstate NY, which is brutal in winter but very nice the rest of the year, and VERY affordable - especially with regard to real estate. But, you have to get a good job there, and this isn't a problem if you've got experience and a strong resume. Don't look to 'work your way up' in upstate NY, the opportunities are few.

PA is similar, but may have more opportunities in some areas.

The rest of the midwest is quite good. Attainable real estate, decent job climate, and good schools. I'm in Minnesota now and the people here are really friendly. Schools are good. Taxes are going up, but they've been low compared to the rest of the country.

I haven't spent much time in the pacific NW, but I hear it's great up there too...but getting more expensive as more people 'discover' it.

Best of luck to you. I moved here from Los Angeles so I know what you mean about California. I miss it, but I can't afford it...

What about vermont or virginia they are both nice and they are both good prospects of what you want. maybe north carolina they are all nice places to live . I have lived in all 3 . Now I live in fla and I hate it here too hot ,ppl are nasty here and cant seem to find good employment but husband has good job and he will not leave another story. But these are some you might consider . Good luck and god bless.

I live in Washington D.C. and it is nice. Believe me you don't want to live on the side I live on but maybe something surrounding it. Some Prince George's county area ( of course then you would have to put kids in private schools) but Montgomery county is great and it's close enough to D.C. that there is always activities to enjoy.

Does it have to be in the US? What about Canada? They speak english and have maple syrup. I don't know. I'd say Washington State. Good weather, nice people, decent prices, cheaper than Cali.
