I've been doing Martial Arts for around five years. About a year ago, I thought it started to get a little boring so I stopped going. Just about two months ago, I started going back. It's been a lot of fun and everything, but It's been hard to make myself go. I don't want to become a lazy person! Please help!

I train 5 to 6 times a week so I understand how tempting it is to stay home and relax. Although what I've always noticed is that when I do train, I always feel better about myself afterwards. The whole problem is getting my butt out the door...

To resolve the issue I've taken the same approach that many people use regarding working out. Since most martial arts schools are open all afternoon, I just go straight there after work. I noticed the times I was tempted not to go, were always when I was at home and settled. I was comfortable already, so I really didn't want to move.

Using this same logic is a little harder when you haven't gotten home yet. There are less excuses and less temptation, especially since you had to pack all your equipment, uniform, etc. that morning. Also, keep in mind that going to you're school early doesn't essentially mean you have to start training from the time you get there. Sometimes I just BS with other students and instructors, other times I use the extra time to get warmed up and work on technique.

Again, I don't know what you're schedule is like, or how much time you have between coming home from school/work and going to class, but whatever the case, try to get to class as early as possible. The longer you stay home, the easier it is to become idle, and before you know it you've become one with the couch...

Get a buddy. People are social animals. If you have someone that you meet up with at practice, then you'll go to meet up with them, and look forward to it. No matter how much you enjoy being in shape and being able to fight, no one enjoyes the kicking until you can't kick any more or the listening to your instructor aspect simply for itself. It all has a further purpose, but some people live in the moment, and that's not a bad thing. Some people have a hard time seeing the end result for what they're doing right now. Sure, when you sit down at home and think about it, you can see it, but the "oh, if I just miss one class..." syndrome becomes cronic.

But if you're going to meet someone there, someone whose company you enjoy, and you have something happen you want to share with them, you'll be excited to go for that.

I used to have four friends that I only saw at class. We would compete in sparing, and we would talk, and laugh, and when we got more advanced, we would teach classes together when Sifu was out of town. I'm the only one of the four of us left, after we all went to college I was the only one who came back. But that's how I became a Black Belt, was by developing friends that challenged me to return.

Hey sweetie, here's some link to awesome highlight of buakaw. He's a K-1 max fighter from Thailand. He came from a poor family and have basically nothing. However he did very well in Muay Thai and eventually got into K-1 Max in 2004. He was only 21 at the time and pretty much unknown and every Thai guys have lose. So basically no one give him a chance to win. However he manage to pull off a huge upset. Now he's travelling all over world giving seminar and fighting. He also donated a lot of moneys to charity and bought his family a house. This summer he become the first person to win K-1 max title for second time :-) If that doesn't inspire you then I don't know what will.

I gather that your issue is getting yourself to go to class, but once there you enjoy it. Is this right? If so, I don't know what to tell you. This isn't really a MA issue but more a behavioral science issue. If the classes aren't as much fun as they used to be, you need to ask yourself why. Sometimes aftr a break, it's frustrating because of the rust. This is particularly true for younger students. The only thing I can suggest is that you work on focusing your spirit to overcome whatever it is that is holding you back.

Go. If you have fun go. If you don't stop. Think about it this way. Martial Arts is stress relief, anger management, relaxation and muscle building all in one. Better than a work out in the gym.

Have you thought about doing a different Martial Arts? Maybe you have lost your zest for that training. Maybe a change would do you good. By the way Steven Segal is a whimp by the way!! Jackie Chan all the way!!

just go at least twice a week. one day will be sparring and the other will be forms and technique parctice. 2 months wont kill you. 6 months will though. if you still want to practice a lot more, practice at least an hour in the house fighting or practicing on techniques. i hope this helps!

Talk to your instructor. Maybe he or she can start introducing you to new things. If that doesn't go well, it may be time to start looking for a new place. IMHO, the most important thing about a school is that you like it enough to go there and to practice regularly. Styles and even the skill level of the instructor don't matter if you don't practice...

you just have to motivate yourself to go, like some good music for a quick warmup before you head out for class.

you have to motivate yourself for everything you do, whether its work, school, your Martial Arts class.

I always find that if I put on some of my favorite music and try a quick warmup session before I leave for class works pretty well.

good luck in your motivation.
