Being a parent I would have to say they don't go outside and play because times have changed and it is to dangerous now. My biggest fear is someone kidnapping my daughter. We have a nice sized backyard for her to play in, and she plays out there for 2 or 3 hours everyday. I refuse to purchase video games for fear of her being glued to the tv during her free time. I do let her go out front and ride her bike up and down the street, only if I am out there with her to supervise. It is very sad, but some parents don't have the time, or are too lazy to be out with their children. As for going off on adventures, I remember doing the same when I was a child, we always went down the street and played in "the field" but with new housing developments there is no longer fields nearby to play in. I probably wouldn't let my daughter go anyway. We take many mini vacations as a substitute and go camping or take day trips just outside of town to do subtle explorations. Just takes some effort from the parents to make up for the outdoor adventures that children now lack. :)

Have you heard of Sex offenders that's why kid's don't go outside anymore. It's to dangerous now a days. To many bad things can happen and some parents don't have the time or ability to watch their kids 24/7. Search the web for registered sex offenders in your area and then tell me if you would want to let you child play outside and those are just the registered sex offenders there's no telling how many aren't registered or haven't even been caught yet.

Modern children are lazy and unadventurous. They lack the motivation to go outside to play and explore. Partly this is because it is so much more of a dangerous environment outside than it has ever been before in modern society, and partly because of the many more addictive distractions indoors, particulaly "dumb" activites like watching TV, talking on the mobile telephone, playing video games and so forth.

Its too dangerous!
Look at the papers and the news and maybe then you wouldn't ask questions like this!
Sorry I may seems a bit rude but the world has become a dangerous place not only for adults but especially for young children and unfortunately alot of children are left to their own devices and alot of harm is caused by this.
Freedom is no longer a possibility, we need to look after our children and protect them from the badness outside.

tv, video games, compurers, there is so many distractions now days that sometimes they don't even now how much fun it can be to go outdoors. parents sometimes forget about it too and don't encourage their kids to do different stuff. busy with their jobs and the stress of the day that all they want and not to be mean is a little bit of free time to relax and have some quiet time but they can't forget that they are parents too and keeping the kids busy on constructive things like fishing, camping and reading a good book can get them out of trouble later on in their lifes.

Because we have sexual predators waiting at every corner. You cannot go to the beach and take your eyes off your kids for a second or they might be gone. We have internet and video games that have taken the place of what you and I remember about our childhoods. I can remember taking a path in the woods to my best friends house. Imagine that path today! Evil lurking behind every dark shadow. It is a sad, sad world.

Because the government makes us think that the Taliban is going to kidnap our children off the playground and train them as terrorists. And nuclear fallout from North Korean atomic testing has polluted the very air we breathe!!!

Really--how much time do YOU spend playing outside vs. watching TV or surfing the net. Probably not as much as most kids.

My kids go outside almost daily to play. There is no games on the weekdays and no computer on the weekdays.I have 6 boys.5 of them are into games and computer. They get 1 hour each on the weekends to play the game then the computer. They will get extra time if they did something real good through out the weekday. My question is why do moms sit on the couch watching tv,movies and dad sits playing games and then they question why their kids dont play outside.(was not refering to the asker).

It's really simple - it's called video entertainment.
Shut off the T.V., hide the X Box, and teach them to play baseball or to ride a bike, or just about anything outdoors.
Some of the problem is that parents don't take the time to teach them these things and leave it up to video games or T.V to teach them.
