Well it doesn't mean we should "hyphenate" everyone.
But for some dang reason it seems to be mandatory.

Mexican-American, African-American......I don't get it.

Didn't YOU come here to get away from the place you lived???
So why the allegiance to some place you RAN away from????
Go BACK if you love it so much.
But stop this "hyphenation crap.

U.P.

No it means people from all over the world mixed here as did your grandparents. America has gone further than any other society in establishing equality of rights among all nationalities.
America has found a solution to the problem of religious and ethnic conflict that continues to divide and terrorize much of the world. Visitors to places like New York are amazed to see the way in which Serbs and Croatians, Sikhs and Hindus, Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants, Jews and Palestinians, all seem to work and live together in harmony. How is this possible when these same groups are spearing each other and burning each other's homes in so many places in the world?
America is the only country in the world that extends full membership to outsiders. An American could spend 40 years in India but would not become Indian. In America, by contrast, hundreds of millions have come from far-flung shores and over time they, or at least their children, have in a profound and full sense "become American."
So you say WASPs (White Anglio Saxon Protestants). Wouldn't you agree thats ignorant? Look around and open your eyes and stop flaunting your ignorance and hate. You are lucky to be here.

well, i've heard it as "mixing pot" or something along the lines of that, but it just means that the US is full of many different races and ethnic peoples. People from all over come to the united states and become a part of the country. Thus, it's a "melting" or "mixing" pot for people.

US Melting Pot refers to the idea of stew. Lets say you throw some carrots and onions and beef and celery in to make a stew. After it is made, eventhough you could pull out the carrot and say "hey you - you're a carrot!" and do the same with the other items, they would still be tainted and be part of the stew. In the same way, people who immigrate here 1) become accustomed to the American way of life and are often part of it even if they leave. and 2) many nationalities and backgrounded people mate and have families that are of other backgrounds. So what do you call a woman that is a little bit guatamalean, a little bit irish, a lot swedish, and a lot lebonese? American, that's what!

Hope that helps.

Your detail does not do justice to your question. I love camparisons: Pot of chicken soup: Add chicken, celery, onion, salt etc. Now being in the same pot does not make the chicken turn into a celery it just means that the combination of all the ingredients "the melting pot" is good.

No this means that all the cultures and ethnicities have merged together to make up what we call the USA. But in my opinion since racisim is still an ongoing problem i see the more dominant cultures as the oil and we the minorites are the water we will never completely mix!!!!!

We are not a melting pot anymore. What the freaks want is for us to be a big tossed salad and that just doesn't work out. Melting pot would be fine with me.

It means anyone who chooses to come here legally is welcome. Yes , if you intend to stay here you must learn English as it is the official language of America. If you can not or will not learn English , Please return to where you came from.Example; If I move to France(which I would not) & I become a citizan there I would have to know their language just to get a job. So if you come here & go to work you must know our language because I am not going to learn yours. English for ALL americans.

Very simply, that we all originated from other lands, and we blend into one common people for respect of the US, while still maintaining our own heritage......WITHOUT forcing our heritage on others by attempting to change common laws/regulations to suit any one particular heritage. It's been going on for generations. Why does one come to the US, if only to change e/thing to suit their wishes. I say, stay in one's own homeland.

It means having people from all races and walks of life come together to learn from one another and to work TOGETHER. Creating a more productive and happy life for everyone involved especially our children who when we are all gone will continue with what we, their parents taught them.
