Twice this week, people complained about their bosses to me and said they were bipolar and looney....because they have mood swings and are mean.

As a person who has been bipolar for a long time, I am not mean

My mom is bipolar. It is just stereotypes. The type of people that you described are extreme cases. Don't take what they say and interpret it to mean you.

I am sorry that your coworkers call your boss bi polar. My little sister has Bi Polar, and she complains about the word being used incorrectly. Your coworkers most likely say that your boss is bipolar because they think that having mood swings and bipolar are the same thing. Just like a person who suffers from depression is lumped all together, even though clinical depression and normal depression are worlds apart.
What can be done to change your coworkers vocabulary? You might bring in pamplets from the National Insistute of Mental Health, or bring it up to HR. You might nicely correct your coworkers on the difference, or you can continue to vent her and to your friends and family.

They use the term because it is chucked around a lot in the media at the moment. Loads of celebs claim to be bipolar to excuse their behaviour, and because it's seen as a 'trendy' diagnosis.

If they knew the truth about bipolar, they would change their tune. I wouldn't wish my illness on my worst enemy.

I think bipolar is the most misused term. It used to be ADD then ADHD. Now it's bipolar. People are constantly misdiagnosed and most people use the term sarcastically to describe idiots.

It is just ignorance and people steroyping. Bipolar is the thing to call people. I hate it when people do not use the term correctly. But it is best just to ignore them and not argue.

people don't assume this, they are probably being sarcastic,.

The same way I tell people my boss is the anti-christ. she isn't, surely, but I hate her so I say mean things that are riddled with sarcasm

I wouldn't assume that everyone thinks this. A few ignorant people shouldn't cause you to think that everyone feels this way.

They just say that as a joke and they do not really know what they are talking about.
