When I work out or do any extrenuating activities, I swell up like a balloon (ankles, fingers [can't wear rings], etc). What causes this, possibly fluid retention?

What can I do to avoid this?

Hello Natalie:
This is something that alot of athletes or people who exercise have problems with. A lot of times when your body sweats, you are making more sweat than your body can expel. salt pills are used to evaporate the sweat and the heat from areas and the help your body absorb the excess water.
If this is a problem that doesn't need extenuating activities to cause the swelling, I would urge you to go to your Doctor for testing as it might be a medical condition that can easily be corrected by medication.
Thanks and all the best!

It could be fluid retention, particularly if the swelling feels 'boggy' and soft. It is causes by fluid leaking out of capillaries into the surrounding tissue.
A diuretic will give symptomatic relief (dandelion leaf is an excellent diuretic which also contains potassium, usually depleted by diuretics). Drinking a lot of water can also produce diuresis and reduce swelling.
To tackle the cause, you need to strengthened your blood vessels, eating garlic can help and the herbs Hawthorne and horse chestnut are good for capillary leakage. Dark berries such as blueberries, logan berries, cherries etc contain anthocyanidins which strengthen blood vessels generally.

If you are overweight, you need to slim down as it causes pressure, forcing out more fluid. Warm up well and stretch after exercising.

Best wishes.

obviously it is fluid retention, why do you think you swell? air?
Fluid rentention is most often caused by an incompetent circulatory system which includes your heart. Suggest you see a cardiologist to rule out heart disease.

If you are having swelling like this at anytime... see your doctor. It could be serious. Sometimes swelling is caused from a serious heart condition.
