I just adopted him yesterday and he has a problem with his eye. It has all this icky gunk in it and he keeps it closed. It doesn't look like it feels too nice, either. And he has been coughing and sneezing constantly. He also has a raspy meow. I'm sure it's a cold... how do I help out?

My kitten had the same exact problem. He does have a cold. They gave him 3 different medications, and an eye gel for the gunk. he healed in about a week, but i have to use all of th emeeidcation. Id go to the vet right away. Kittens are sensitive, and it can be very dangerous if he has a cold and is exposed to something else!!

I adopted a kitten at the humane society that had the same thing: an upper respiratory infection{a cat cold} His eye was getting worse and he was sneezing too! I brought him back and told them that his eyes were getting worse so the vet saw her and gave her antibiotics and eyedrops! I didn't have to pay because she was sick when I got her there! Now, she is fine! But, if you have other cats, they will probably catch it because it is highly contagious for about 10 to 12 days! My older cat caught it but he had it mild. I still had to take him to the vet because he had stopped eating! He is fine now too! So, don't wait, take her to the vet before it gets to her lungs because she could die!! Good luck!!

You should take him to the vet to get medicine for the infection and make sure nothing else is wrong. When you adopt an animal from the shelter sometimes they get infections from other animals that are either in the same cage as them or just in the room. My mom's cat had the same problem. Take him to the vet ASAP

Hello! I have two lovely cats, one is 7 mo. and the other is 3yrs. old. When they are sick like your feline, I actually use some eye drops in their eyes and always keep some baby tylenol liquid and give then just like a drop with some water. Don't take me wrong...I had always ask their Vet. Dr. about it. I had done this for years and they had kept in good health. use a cloth and merge it in warm water, then clean the affected area softly and once you do that, just one drop in his eyes, he will feel a litle discomfort, just don't worry he will be just fine. keep him next to you and cuddle him. Cats love the attention when they feel a little sick and most of the time they get better when their owner is next to them. Just keep him warm and check on him every other 30mins. or so talk to him. Trust me he will be happy soon. Some times the care you give them...is the care they all need.

He most likely has a respiratory infection or herpes in the eye that causes coughing and sneezing. He could have both, but in any case, he needs medication asap.

If you got him from the shelter they should of made sure he was healthy before giving him to you. I would ask them to reimburse you for the vet examination or give you a coupon for a free visit.

Lot's of cats get illnesses in a shelter.

Take a warm wash cloth and rub his eyes with it 2 times a day. Make sure you use a clean wash cloth every time. As far as the coughing and sneezing, wait a few days, it will probably get better. I have out door strays that do that sometimes and they always seem to get better in a few days if not take him to the vet.

Oh Please Dear One, take the wee kitten to a vet! Gunk in the eyes and coughing/sneezing are never good. He needs your love and some serious medical attention. Most (not all) vets are willing to work with you on paying the medical bills, if money is a problem. Please don't wait.

You need to take him to the Veterinarian. He is sick and it could be a serious infection. The Vet will put him probably on Antibiotics. I don't believe it is a cold, especially the problem with his eyes.
