I know there is a special term for it. I don't think bereavement fits. Any suggestions?

I don't mean what is passed down to you (as in inheritance). What I specifically mean is when you find out someone has passed away, and you would like to help them by giving them money. What type of donation is that called? I'm not sure what term to refer to it as.

Sympathy? Memorial Fund?
Not sure exactly what you are looking for, it's not really a donation (not tax deductible) but a gift. So bereavement would be fine as well. If are thinking in context of doing a car wash or a bank fund to assist the family, 'memorial fund' or just 'family assistance fund' would probably be best. You might also be thinking of a 'survivors assistance fund'. -- Benevolent gift is also good.

When someone passes away and you make a gift in their honour they can be referred to as a Memoriam/um or perhaps on occasion an Honourariam/um. These are gifts to a charity, and they are receiptable.

If you are using it for the death notice, you would say something like, "The family would be honoured if, in lieu of flowers, a memorial gift/ gift in memory, could be made to Insert Charity name or the charity of your choice"

I've never heard of getting money for someone passing away (other than inheritance, of course). That seems quite odd to me.
