First you have to have a good product.
If you have a good product and no one knows about it, what good is it?
You need advertising. Lots and lots of money spent telling people (and showing them) how good your products are.
You can't do anything without licenses and permits, Check them out.

Do you know what you want to do? How much time can you put into the business? Can you dedicate a portion of the home just for the business? An office or place to do the books, correspondence, etc that is away from the rest of the house helps keep you focused. Contact your city/county to see what business licenses you need. They will be particularly interested if people will be coming to your home (parking), making deliveries, etc. Do you live where there's a homeowner's association? Hopefully your type business won't endanger the covenants. You may also need to up your homeowner insurance.......speaking of which, how will you be legally protected? If someone sue's you will it endanger your home? Talk to your insurance agent. Geez, here you are thinking about starting a business and all these other issues come up.......just pointing out, it sounds good but it's more than just "the job."

First thing to do is to make sure is WHAT product do u want to market ? Then are you going to be doing this Alone or with someones Help ? Check with your local authorities whether u require any special permissions to setup a business. After that, Lets say u wanna sell cookies, Invite all of ur friends and neigbhours over to ur place and have them taste the cookies u made. Ask for their opinions and also their support by spreading word abt ur business. After that when u start making profit, (which will take some time) Try to use flyers and posters to let ppl know abt ur cookies and by the Good Lords will you will prosper
PS,.... I hope it works out good for you, if it does, then plz send me some cookies...

Start by asking who wants these cookies, cakes, and pies. Once you determine if there is a customer out there for your products you can start marketing to them and get orders. Once you have orders, you just need to make the cookies, cakes, and pies.

Important things to think about are how much investment you will need to start this business and how long will it take to pay off. A lot of small business go under by not having enough capital to fund themselves through the start up phase.

Find the type of business on the link below that best describes what it is that YOU do (or want to do). Then see how to truly use the Net to make your specific business (or business idea) thrive. http://www.wotsnext.com

Or, take a look at how I use the above. Then see if you can fit something similar around your own area of expertise. (About $300 will get you started.)

Then all you need is a passion and some persistence. http://www.psychic-junkie.com/are-you-psychic.html This page links you to all the resources I use.

The number one thing you must have is a demand for your products. If you already have people asking you to bake certain things for them and they pay you, you're off to a good start.

I would't worry about the "business" aspect of it until you are selling more than $2000 worth per year. At that point, you will need to declare the income and file taxes as a business.

Certaintly a nice flash web site, plus a small van for deliveries local, lots of flyers, Yellow pages too. Think about the legislation though, insurance, health and safety, local planning laws, environmental health, mortgage restrictions etc etc etc

Did you post the same question twice? lol
I recommend using business network communities they have n the US. If you type home business opportunity on any random search engine, you will find loads.
I recommend these business networks because they are cheap, flexible and effective (the good ones anyway). I haven't applied for any so I cannot make finer recommendations.

Good luck.
