RE:
what money is used in Rome, Italy?

The euro is used throughout Italy. Lire are no longer accepted, but stores frequently still post prices and issue receipts with the lire equivalent of the euro shown because the people here are still adjusting to the change to euro. If your ATM card is coded for international withdrawals (check with your bank), you'll get the best exchange rate by using your ATM card. Just don't get really low on cash because sometimes the international lines are down, the machines occasionally "eat" a card, and sometimes the machines are out of cash--no different from in the U.S.

The currency used in Rome, as well as in all of Italy, is the Euro. It is the same currency used in France, Germany, Austria and many other countries. The previous currency in use was the Lira.

Euros

Italy is part of the European Union (EU) and therefore recognizes the Euro as the official currency. The Lira is still in circulation and may be used as well. If exchanging money at larger hotels and major transportation hubs you will be given Euros but the rate will not be as good as what a bank would offer.
