My mother has been diganosed with multiple myeloma and developed blood clots from some of her treatment. She was given medication to combat the clots and would like to know how long it takes for the clots to dissolve.

The medication that is given to people who form deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the deep veins) is NOT directed at dissolving the clot. Instead, it inhibits further clot formation. In the mean time, the clot goes through a series of changes that eventually result in the "recanalization" or re-opening of the vein passage way.

The most important aspect of this type of therapy is that one tries to prohibit the growth and propogation of an unstable blood clot which may break loose from the vein wall and float downstream into and through the heart, and then into the lung where it wedges. If the clot is large enough, this accident can be fatal.

The question of how long it takes to rid the body of this clot is essentially irrelevant. There are a variety of passageways in the venous system, and if the blood is impeded by clot in one vein, it will flow by way of another. The question is how long it will take before it is safe to come off the medication, and the answer to that is about 6 months. After that point, the clot is strong scar tissue and there are passages tunnelled right through it that transmit flow.

There may be persistant swelling of the limb for some time afterward. This can potentially continue after the clot has recanalized. Some people have swelling of the leg as a result of venous back-pressure even without a clot. The treatment is through the use of compression stockings. Do not use these prior to the time at which coumadin is discontinued because you don't want to squeeze an unstable clot loose and actually cause the clot to float into the lung. However, if the swelling persists even after the medicine is discontinued, then compression stockings are very useful!

I hope that answers your question.

Depends on how effective are the medicines that are being used to dissolve the clots.

I had a Pulmonary Embolism while I was on chemo. With treatment, it took about 3-4 weeks to resolve. Best wishes!

There is no given time frame! I had one in my lower leg, they gave me coumadin and made me lay flat for three days, then they were constantly checking my levels for almost a year before they let me off of it!
