Best choice of car for 18yr old male FOR INSURANCE?

Question

Im looking for a first car, but being a 18yr old male, all the insurance companies just look at that, deem me a "Boy racer" and whack an extra £600 average to my insurance! (I know this as i did the research.) So im actully asking 2 questions
1) What is the best cheap/cheapest car to run?
2) What is the best insurer to buy from?

I dont really mind what sort of car i drive, so long as its not pink.

get a diesel. you may not have thought of this but a young driver driving a diesel is seen as someone sensible by an insurance company

any small bottom of the range car in groups 1-4 should be cheap to insure if you opt for diesel - plus you'll save loads on running costs.

Anything in Insurance Group 1 or 2.
Pick up a copy of "Parker's Guide" at your local newsagent, - it will list all used cars for the past few years along with their insurance groups. There are some fun-to-drive cars in low groups (Punto, Seicento, Ka, Fiesta, Lupo, Saxo, 106 - but make sure you can fit comfortably in the last two, as their driving positions are not ideal). Alternatively, you might find something like a Skoda Felicia very cheap to insure, because its something no "boy racer" would ever buy, if you can live with the image.

Also buy a copy of "Autotrader" - there's no point setting your heart on a particular model if its not available locally.

Don't buy anything modified from standard factory specification - that will increase your insurance costs.

The best-value insurer varies greatly depending on your driving history, age, type of car, where you live, what you do for a living, what day of the week it is, and what Terry Wogan had for breakfast (maybe not quite that random, but it seems it). I'm afraid there's no alternative to making a few phone calls, and visiting insurance websites like http://confused.com/ .
Also, don't assume the cheapest insurer this year will be the cheapest next year - it always pays to shop around every year.

There are 2 things that push your insurance up. Obviously your age/lack of experience, but there is another too, LOADING. Loading is created by the number and percentage of each type of car involved in a claim. You can save yourself a lot of money by looking for a car with very little loading. Sports is obviously out of te question, that just creates more loading. But many small cars may save money on basic policy, but because many young drivers buy them, and crash them, they carry a surprising loading.

When I was 18 (8years ago) the cheapest car for me, cheaper than a Fiesta or a Metro, was a Rover 827 Sterling. This car had 170BPH, did 0-60 in 8.5 seconds, but because it was always bought by experienced middle-class executives and older Gentlemen it carried almost no loading, therefore insurance was cheap. The modern Equilivent would be the Rover 75 2.5 V6 or perhaps a Citroen XM. Take a good look at these type of cars, ones you never really see being involved in accidents.

I know this is going to sound rather daft but if you study these carefully you may find you can have a very reasonable car and save money at the same time.

Toyota Yaris is a great, reliable car. It has an fuel tank which sprays the fuel you need into the engine, instead of just pouring it like a regular car. It's therefore a lot more economical when it comes to petrol. It is kind of small though. But because it has a smaller engine (1 ltr ) the insurance will be cheaper too. I can't advise you about insurance because I live in Ireland, but just shop around to get the best deal. Good luck.

1) You are looking at a near 10+ year old car, 3 door. So for good choices I pick Fiestas, Focus, Micras, Accents, Golfs.

2)Insurers vary. Ask a local insurance service company for best choices (these can be found in yellow pages). Most people go for Direct Line or Norwich Union.

Find an older model, because insurance rates are lower for older models, and pay for it out right without a loan. Taking out a loan forces you to buy full coverage insurance instead of just liability. Use the same insurance company as your folks do. You could then qualify for a multi-car discount. If you are in school, keep your grades up and you could qualify for a good-student discount. My 18 year old son has $300 in discounts
off of his insurance every six months.

its funny why dont they sting the girls as much as the lads.i'm a 19yr old girl and me and ma mate do as much boy racin as the lads!!!just get some thing that boy racers dont have like and old granny car!! lol hastings are a good insurance company!! your yellow pages as they have special numbers for under 21's too ring!! the fiesta are good like an n reg, a nisan micra. vauxhaul corsa and a astra, just get somthing with a low engine size!! the cheaper the car is worth the cheaper your insurance i found out too!!my insurance was about 900 pound the cheapest insurance!!! just look around!! ring up loads of insurance deals and the wil ask if you have had a quote with any one else say yeah and nock abit off it!! and you never no they might give ya better deal!! Dont go for a punto, saxo!! cause they are known for bad boy racer cars!!
