The Horror stories where from previous IUD they have since then been perfected. Its recommended for women in monogamous relationship and long term and women who have had at least 1 child the reason being is that
1. If you happen to catch an infection (which the IUD doesn't cause HUGE myth) Its harder to treat and if not treated properly and promptly can lead to infertility
2. Women who have had at least 1 child have a slightly larger uterus than a woman who has never had a full term pregnancy there for preventing perforation of the IUD or explosion of it.
3. at the time of removal if not done by an experienced professional can cause some scarring of the uterus which may cause infertility as well.
Infertility happens in .08% of women so the risk is very low BUT it is there.
Pregnancy rate in it is that of a woman who has undergone tubal ligation so its very slim and the chance of ectopic pregnancy is HIGH because it doesn't prevent ectopic pregnancies (another MYTH is that it CAUSES ectopic pregnancies)
Hormone wise it has a very low dose that very little gets in your blood stream.

I had an iud after I had my 3rd child and I found it very effective. I have since had my tubes tied and I kinda wish I kept the iud. It was the only birth control method that got my periods regulated.I tried the pill, the patch, the shot and everything else they could think of. I was skeptical at first to get it because I heard horror stories about them but decided to give it a try and I found that I really liked it.

I used IUDs for years and had no problems. Easy, low hassle, effective birth control.

It works better for women who have had children before. The new ones like mederva or whatever its called, are all plastic, so theres less chance of them tearing the uterine wall.
Theyre really quite effective, especially the ones that have small ammounts of hormones.
Ive heard horror stories about the first ones that were plastic/copper, but not so much about the all plastic ones.

I have one and it is excellent. I had none of the side effects that people talk about. I don't even have a period anymore! I have the Mirena brand, and I would definately reccomend it. One of the drawbacks though, is it is only for women who have been pregnant at least once.
