It's better to try and fail than never to try at all

Someone who never tries for anything ALWAYS fails, someone who always tries is ALWAYS a winner because they are a better person as a result

Make it a rule of life to never be in the position of wondering "what if...?"

Prior to him going out for the team I would sit down and talk with him about the chances of making it or not making it. Ask him if he DOES make it, is he willing to put 100% effort into the team. ( I am assuming since you dont think he will, this may be his first year, or little practice in the game) You also need to tell him that there are going to be a lot of kids with a lot of experience in the game and the coaches may choose them over him...

Keep supporting him. Tell him to keep practicing and he may make the team next year. If you focus on what he did wrong, you will only make his thoughts revolve around the negative and not the positive. You should try to find some other hobby that he is good at to take his mind off of the failure of not making the team. If he sees himself excelling at something, he will be less likely to think of the past failure.

I hope he makes it though, best of luck!!!

That is a tough one, because nobody likes rejection. Sports as kids get older becomes less fun and more competitive. My younger son played football, but as the years went on, he didn't get quite tall enough and found himself mowed over a few times, he made the choice himself to join the ski club. Sometimes the usual sports, baseball, football etc are not the best and quite frankly, I think it takes more talent to ski and snowboard vs. tossing a ball around. Keep encouraging him and allow him to make his own decisions...he knows the answer. Good Luck Mom.

If he doesn't make it find out why. If he's not as skilled as the other players, find another sport he's better at than basketball , or encourage him to get better & practice for next year, and encourage him to be involved in other sports. Having stamina & being in better shape then everyone else gives you an edge, he can accomplish that by doing another sport during basketball season this year & be in better shape for next year.

Tell him that life isn't all about what he is acknoliged for, that life is more than school or having a good social status. You love him and care for him, and that is what really matters in this life. Tell him that he should never give up on his goals and some day he shall succeed.

I always told my boy to never give up. Keep trying and you will do better next year. Then I asked if i could help him practice, and it turned out to be a great "father-son bonding" thing. And the next year he turned out to be the MVP
