My gym teacher says lay on your back with knees together pointing 90 degrees.Your knees can be slightly apart. keep your arms cross over your chest. The goal is to get your back off the ground. Each time you do a sit up your back must touch the floor and your arms must touch your knees.

Sit up works the abdomen
crunches/ leg raises= lower stomach

If you want to work oblete muscles (sides) and lower stomach sit in a sit up position and shift your torso from left to right.

You can do crunches or sit ups. Crunches apparently help your abs more, they are when you have your knees shoulder distance apart and you lift your upper body up just off the ground. Sit ups have the same knee format but you sit all the way to touch your knees.

Knees should be about shoulder width apart. Keep you lower back flat and lift your shoulder blades off the ground, concentrating on your ab muscles. Lift slowly and lower slowly - you don't have to life that high, really. Don't pull on your head - think about keeping your chin off of your neck while keeping your neck neutral (your chin shouldn't be arched to far up or pushed too far forward - either of these will strain your neck!)). You should feel the burn in your abs and nowhere else. good luck!
