I know what you mean. When I open my inbox and find 6 or 7 notifications of replies to my questions I get hopeful that they will be decent answers but a majority of them are just insulting or otherwise not relevant to the question.
Unfortunately the answer is: because people enjoy it. They enjoy insulting people and they enjoy p!ssing people off. The obvious example is "The What Should I Do Retard" To be honest I don't see how it's entertaining especially when it's done over such a long period of time. You're right though, they really should see a shrink, or at least reflect on their actions.

You have noticed something I have seen in almost everything Yahoo! does. The chat groups were the same way. This is not Yahoo's fault, however, it is that they are so large the pick up a massive cross sampling of the public. In the United States today there is a mass migration towards darkness. I've no idea why. If you look at today's 20 and 30 crowds, they have grown up in relative peace and prosperity, and yet the behave as if they have lived in want and deprivation, and as such have the right to be antisocial. I don't get it. Could be they are spoiled and self-absorbed because they have not face real adversity. I don't feel sorry for them. I don't pity them. I do see a day coming that they will have to belly up with those they have hated for the sake of the nation (if not the world) they are going to have a very hard time with it.
If you read the attached story, you will find it is not just on the Yahoo! groups.

I believe the reason so many people are insulting here is that they use insults as a defense for their own insecurity. I find the most insulting comments from athiests (but I may be biased as a Christian). I believe this because if I chose to be an athiest, I probably would not be wasting my short meaningless life answering and asking questions to people that I thought were stupid and brain washed. Why argue about it?
On the other hand I have seen some weak Christians becoming agressive and crude. This is contradictory to Christianity as a whole. As a Christian we should respect and love all people. Any Christian who insults people has failed their faith. Most likely these people really don't understand what or why they believe what they believe. That is most likely why athiests and agnostics find Christianity to be so hard to accept. The see the hyporcritical actions of some so called "Christians" and believe that it just confirms their decision.
My faith is founded on knowledge. I was not brain washed or forced to be a good person. I understand you were brought up in a most likely Catholic setting filled with rituals and rules without the love of Christ. I understand that you feel burned by this but I would offer my prayers for your understanding.
Jesus contantly called the pharisees a "brood of vipers" because they were selfish and did not truly know God. His message is very clear to me. The religious leaders of the day had missed the point all together. They followed the law and thought they were righteous. Jesus explained that the law was made to keep man from harms way, not to make them righteous. God made laws and commandments to make our lives better on Earth.
The message is that it is not about rules, it is about love. Love God with all of your heart, mind, and strength. Secondly love everyone else. This is not about following rules.
Being a better person is a direct result of growth in Christianity. I try not to sin not because I want to make myself righteous. I can't, and no one can. We have all sinned. I try not to sin because I don't want to anymore, not because it makes me a better Christian.
People who answer and ask rude or insulting questions are insecure. They are scared that they have made the wrong decision, so they defend them self with offense to feel better about making a mistake.

No, they do it to be funny. Get a sense of humor, and stop playing the low self esteem card that is not the answer to everything. You must have the low self esteem since you take it all so personally, just answer back with a jibe and touche. So be funny back, you know they would never do it face to face, so call them on it!

Maybe some of those people are lonely and excluded from the people in their lives.
If they post insults, they are bound to get a response from a few people out there. I don't think it's good to insult them back.

Because they are A--wholes.
Despite the best intentions one may start out with, sooner or later you will realize that the old saying "It takes all kinds to make the world go round" is false. We are just stuck with all kinds. Don't cater to them by any suggestion that they can be helped or are suffering from something not their fault. There are a lot of A__wholes out there and a lot of them post here where they are safe behind a phony picture and name.

It stems from pure hatred. I am christian but I would never disrespect any ones religion. The so called Christians that judge others should take a look at themselves because last time I checked the Bible taught us not to judge others that is God's job not ours.

The old saying 'Misery loves company' is a true one. The miserable of this world want everyone to feel as badly as they do. They attempt to achieve this by lashing out.
