Do you mean the practice of abstinence itself, or the programs that promote it as the only acceptable form of birth control? I think abstinence is a great idea, can help prevent all sorts of emotional pain and physical consequences, but the programs that promote it as the only acceptable way are doing more harm than good. These programs ignore reality and keep the kids who are going to have sex anyway, from knowing how to be safe.

Abstainance from what? Foods? Sex? Drugs? Masturbation? Talking? Walking? Singing? Whistling? Laughing? Kissing? Drinking?
See, it just depends on you.
Generally, I go by "If it makes me feel good, I do it" as long as it is legal and not hurting someone else physically. (I say physically, because if others' feelings are hurt it is only because they want to feel that way. Everyone is themselves responsible for how they feel mentally. When they say "You hurt my feelings" they are wrong. Your allowed your feelings to be hurt.

Absolutely none that I can see except the overproduction of infants! I view it as a way of punishing ourself for "sins" that we have already been absolved. Enjoy yourself but protect yourself!

Enjoy!
