I recently bought a flat iron and love the results. I've noticed though that my ends aren't flat and smooth. I know I'm doing something wrong but can't figure out what. I was using Nexxus Heat Protexx and have switched to Bumble and Bumble styling lotion. I get the same result with either product. Could it be the wrong product? Or is it the flat iron? I wasn't sure how I would feel about a flat iron so I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on one. I opted for a Conair Infiniti ceramic 2" flat iron. It works fine but I'm sure there are better options out there.

I should also mention that my daughter's hair turns out the same with the flat iron. We have similar hair, thick and wavy. We try not to condition our hair in the shower because we tend to have oily roots. A stylist suggested we not condition and use a Bumble and Bumble leave-in conditioner.

So, recommendations, anyone?

you need to comb the ends of your hair as you are running the flat iron over them, like right before...you can use a regular comb..or I just use my fingers...I run them through the section I am ironing in front of the iron to keep the hair in line and make sure it is not tangled.....keeping them strait it the best way...you also my be trying to straiten to large of sections at a time...try smaller sections with the combing...and if this doesnt work...it means the ends are fried and you need a trim.......

You do also need a good iron...anything that you can buy at walmart is crap...theey do not get hot enough to do a good job..unless you are trying to flatten out naturally strait hair....Try going to Sally's and buying something in the $40 range that is ceramic...its going to work a lot better

And if you have the money..just buy a CHI...they are $100

I would stick with the bumble and bumble line they have fantastic products . I agree that you should invest in a higher quality flat iron there is one out there by CHI that's great. also when your flat ironing your hair take smaller sections and please make sure your hair is completely dry all over before you use your flat iron, use a comb as you flat iron following the same direction as your flat iron.thick wavy hair should still be condition but if you have oily roots only condition the ends, and have regular trims for any split ends every 6 weeks. I hope these suggestions help.

I thought people with seriously dry hair used leave-in conditioners. Anyway, the fact that the ends of your hair aren't smooth even after flat-ironing using a styling product, indicates that they are under nourished and dry.
I'd suggest using a good conditioner in the shower. Don't apply directly to the roots, concentrate on the ends and do rinse off completely. Apply the styling product on wet hair, starting from the ends to the roots. That will help seal in the moisture.

Try conditioning just the ends of your hair in the shower. It sounds like the ends are just too dry. My daughter, and I have to condition the ends of our hair, but we can't condition all over. It will make a difference. You might want to get like a hot oil treatment to use on the ends to get them smooth. Also, with a flat iron, you'll need to continue to use leave in conditioners along with conditioning in the shower to keep them smooth.

if your scalp is oily and then ends are dry, put conditioner throughout the length of your hair (from the ears down) when you first wet your hair.. then leave that in your hair while you shampoo your scalp really well... rinse and then condition just the ends again..

doing this helps keep the shampoo off the length of your hair so it gets less dry

you need a higher quality iron. check with your stylist. i have very kinky african hair, and i found one that worked. worked well, but it set me back a good $200.
