I have a 14 mo. old girl who just will not hold her bottle (she's done it twice for Daddy, but not for me) or lay down on the floor and hold it herself. She, too, will not try a sippie cup. I think that she just doesn't understand it. I have tried Playtex and Gerber so far with soft spouts and she won't even have it in her mouth for two seconds without pushing it away. I think that she doesn't understand that you have to suck, like you are drinking out of a straw, and get easily frustrated. What should I do? Shouldn't she be weaned from the bottle by now, or at least begin weaning? Her next pediatrician appointment isn't until Nov. 7th. I plan on asking then, too. Thank you.

Let her go at her own pace...all kids have a different timeline.
If you are sure she is fed.....and not in NEED of a bottle ...place the sippy cup out between feedings...and then randomly say ...Mommy needs a drink...I'm so thirsty...and use the sippy cup. She will want to try it because you are doing it. Pretty soon she'll grab it out of your hand whenever you go for it.

how preemie was she? remember it can take 2 years for a preemie to "catch up." if she is not holding her own bottle she does have some delays. what's important is that she is developing at her own pace and stays on that pace. it's like the growth charts. she will not be on target with most her age but if she is growing like she always has (my own preemie has never been above the 35th percentile in weight or height). do some people choose to wean from the bottle at a year, yes. is that something you should force on your child given her circumstances, i don't think so but i'm not her mother and i'm not a professional. just fyi, my own preemie 18month old still gets a bottle of milk at night and at nap and drinks from a cup the rest of the time. i am hoping i can wean him from the bottle by the time he's 2 but if not, oh well. he's doing really good developmentally and he doesn't have any other "comfort" thing he needs. it is something he will grow out of and someday not need. good luck with your baby and great job. raising a preemie is hard, it's different and other parents do not understand the emotions behind it. i didn't understand until i had my little guy.

How premie was she. My son would not take a sippie till 2 and he was a preemie. Give her time and she will do it. Put water in the bottle and the good stuff in the sippie cup. Let her see what you are doing and tell her that the milk, juice, whatever is in the cup. Do you have any that she can see into like the bottles are?

I would gradually get her into it. I would do that by letting her try to drink out of a straw either at home or when you take her out somewhere. She will then start learning in order to get something out of it you have to suck on the straw which then in turn will lead into the sippie cup drinking and holding her own sippie.Hope this helps a little.

i think that u should let the child be like that only.because the child is 14 mnths old u can easily train the child 4 eating directly instead of forsing her to take the sippie...if she is not taking the bottle give her a small glass which she can hold...may be she will enjoy that mare than the bottle.

Don't force it. She'll do it when she's ready. My son hated the Playtex sippie though. I recommend the one by Aventis. It's pink and is kinda shaped like an apple. The spout is better. Good luck!

All babies develop at their own pace. try giving her the sippy cup with you holding it, and don't let go, congratulate her if she takes a sip. and over time, try leaving it in her hands. The main thing is patience.

I incredibly have a a million 12 months previous at domicile and that they do exactly issues on their own time like preserving a bottle on thier own. My son at 6 months could lay on his decrease back and attempt to fig it out. you could attempt that in case you needed.
