How come a lion and a tiger can produce offspring if they mate. Animals without a common ancestor can't mate, or was it a divine miracle that God created two entirely seperate species on different continents who just happen to be able to mate. Another nail in the creationist coffin I fear.

Josh, the liger is a hybrid that has been succesfully bred in captivity in various zoos worldwide. It's conclusive proof of common ancestry and therefore conclusive proof that creationism cannot be factual.

J.D. I never give up on logic and hard fact. If religious beliefs don't conform to reason then they are pretty worthless.

Dansweaza-The conventional definition of species is any of the taxonomic groups into which a genus is divided-I don't think you'll find many biologists who have a problem with that. If the creationist model were true there would be sharp distinctions between the two species and mating could not therefore occur however if the evolutionary model were true the differences would be minimal and mating could occur. The liger and Tigon are therefore supportive of evolution and the idea of a common ancestor.

Let me ask you a question to answer a question. How is it possible that a supreme creator could create a world where animals can live, produce offspring, but only the human mammals can do what we do? And to the comment of if religion doesn't fit into what science "proves" then it is pretty useless, I ask. If there is a God, and I believe there is, would you really believe we could understand all of God and if it didn't fit into what our finite minds have been able to understand, would you refute the God and not the understanding of our minds? We are living in a world that says, "what we can prove is true, and what religion and spirituality stands for can be disproved". If God can be fully understood and fully proved, then we have definately got the wrong God. I don't expect to convert anyone with this answer just to shed some light on the question about lions and tigers. If it is part of God's design that some species can procreate and others not, then I don't have a problem with that, it doesn't prove or disprove anything other than that the flood of Noah might have been a true story and that lions and tigers might have been on the same boat.

Lions and tigers are from the same cat family. Can a lion or tiger mate with a member of the dog family? Can a human mate with an animal and produce offspring? Of course not. We all mate according to our own kind, just as the Bible says. Jehovah god created all things.
Just a few facts regarding our earthly home testifies to a loving Creator:
The earth is placed at just the right distance from the sun, its source of energy in the form of light and heat.
It moves around the sun at just the right speed, and rotates on its axis every 24 hours, and has just the correct angle of tilt.
It has a protective, life-sustaining atmosphere with just the right mixture of gases.
It provides the water and soil needed to grow food.
It provides a variety of delicious and colorful fruits, vegetables and other foods.
We also are able to enjoy the beauty that exists in the sky such as rainbows, the stars and a moonlit night.
We enjoy the mountains, the streams and lakes, the varieties of beautiful fragrant flowers, plants and trees and so many other delightful living things.
When I consider all these things and how I am able to see in living color and can taste all the foods the earth provides, then there can be no doubt that God is real and all things were created by intelligent design.

The liger is definitely one bof most interesting crossbreed offspring I have ever seen. I have often wondered though if they are sterile like many crossbreeds, like mules. And it's interesting that you can only do it one way, according to literature I have read it says it must be a male lion and female tiger, can't do it the other way around, why? Don't really think it is another nail in creation theory coffin, and since there are already so many giant gaping holes in creation, why grasp at straws when you don't need to. I would say it's more a quirk of nature although I see your point but creationists will find a way to explain it even if their idea makes no sense. As for me I'll just go with the fact that there are actual mistakes made in the Bible on basic scientific principles. And if it is indeed the inspired word of God maker of everything how could he have gotten very basic principles wrong?

you're conclusion is faulty. A better conclusion would be that both lions and tigers are just breeds of the same species. After all what constitutes a species? A - the ability to breed and produce a fertile offspring.

Modern designations of species are very sloppy and inconsistent.

Not sure what you know of zoology/ethology/biology, but it is certainly worth pointing out that there isn't even a universally accepted definition of the word "species."

And isn't your common ancestor argument circular?

How do we know these animals can mate?
Because they had a common ancestor.

But how do we know they had a common ancestor?
Because they are able to mate. Only animals with common ancestors can do that. <-- It's a tautology

Anyhow, given your specious logic and the fact that science can't even agree that lions and tigers actaully are different species, your argument is hardly putting nails anywhere.

The Bible refers to different types of animals as KINDS. Science uses the term species.

All dogs are a kind of animal.
All cats (at least small, maybe large also) are a kind of animal.
All bees are a kind of insect.

Scientist are thinking of redoing the whole labeling system of species because of the many errors being found in it (but first they have to figure out how to determine a new system).

Your flaw in logic has nothing to do with lions and tigers mating. The one flaw in your arguement is that creationists' have a coffin. They will be reborn and go to heaven, so they do not need a coffin to lie in.

A lion and a tiger producing offspring is no evidence of evolution.
Now if you can get them to produce a higher form of live you may have something.

Arguments like the one you post here are an embarrasment to evolutionists. lol

Actually they did have a common ancestor,

Noah didn't take the hundreds of varieties of cats on the ark, he took "2" of each kind.

My personal take on this (Not speaking for any other Christian) is that Noah couldn't passably have gotten two of every animal on earth in the ark so it was only necessary to have representative spices that would later evolve to adapt to their environments and their rolls in these environments.
