I have a friend considering joining the denomination, and she's wondering what to expect.

There are about a bazillion different kinds of Baptists with the only commonality (outside of the basics of any Bible-believing Christian churches) between them being that they believe in believer's baptism as opposed to infant baptism. Most also believe in the eternal security of the believer.
My favorite Baptist minister is John Piper. His ministry has a phenomenal website that goes into great detail about what they believe the Bible teaches (online sermons, articles, online books, etc.) It's at http://www.desiringgod.org
