Oxymoronic names for catastrophes. They sound better than "We didn't know", "We just blew the **** out of our side" and "Oops. we didn't mean to hit that orphanage."

Friendly fire means that by accident, an artillery barrage or an air strike is fired on our own people. Military intelligence is supposedly current at the time of a mission or an attack, but a war is like a tug of war where things change constantly and inspite of better communications, it is impossible to control a battle range over miles of territories. Collateral damage is what we expect will happened from an assault....how they react, their force and their weapons...so call it pay-back If you play chess, think about a chess board that is in three levels and every move you make reflects something to the men above or below you. As a commander, you are limited by others' eyes or what you get on a radio but you have to respond now. Sure accidents occur but they occur in other places as well under less stress.

I agree with Frank on the first two. Collateral damage is when we target something (an insurgent hideout, let's say) & something nearby (something that was NOT targeted) gets damaged in the attack.
