Basically what happens is i play the DVD and it comes up but with no picture or sound - but you can see the green bar saying its playing moving - i tried a couple of codecs but no success - could someone help me out by giving me some direct links or something please?

If you uninstall Media Player and then download and re-install Media Player 10 from Microsoft's web site, the installation program will also download the codecs as well. Perhaps you can try doing that.
The codecs you downloaded might be bad or incompatible with your video card.
Did the problem just start happening, or was it always like this? Maybe you need to upgrade your video card drivers.

Go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx and DL the spankin' new WMP 11. It's only been out about 6-7 weeks. Anything missing or wrong with the old player should get fixed, plus you'll have the latest version.
If you still have problems, then you can start looking for codecs and fixes.

try installing VLC player and try again. Worked for me.
