coast guard is part of the military and its not part of the department of transportation its part of DOD and department of homeland security.

you most likely would be able to go home to your family at most nights and the coast guard is really more family oriented in meaning that they actually care about your personal life and try their best to accamodiate your needs.

As a pilot, you get lots of time off. Crew rest is very important in aviation for all services, and it's not taken lightly. However, when you're there, you may be flying for many hours. This is not the norm however. Typically, you fly a 1 mission (time varies based on what type of aircraft you fly, usually 2 to 4 hours) and then do your ground job(s) for the rest of the day. But yes, you will get lots of time off and can pursue other hobbies. As a matter of fact, I got more time off than any of my civilian friends. We always had 2 days off on the weekends. If you had duty on Saturday, you get Monday off. If you fly on Sunday, you get Friday off. If you go through flight training, you will have to finish your commitment. No way out. No free rides. How much you fly depends on what station you're at, and what you fly. It varies based on how many pilots are at your unit too. I've flown 4 times a week sometimes, and once a week others. When you deploy, you'll fly 2 flights every day for about 2 or 3 weeks, at least in fixed wing.
