How does the magic wand tool determine which areas of an image to select?

The magic wand has parameters you can set (numbers) that tell it within how many "degrees of similarity" it should select. Then, when you click on a color, it selects that color and any others that are similar to it. If the number is set low, it will take only a few colors that are VERY similar to the one you chose. If the number is set high, it will take a LOT of colors that seem close to what you selected. Hope this helps!
