My son is 7 years old and in second grade. I picked him up a copy of The Little Prince yesterday. My wife thinks it is wrong to make him read it for his daily reading. She thinks it might be beyond him.

I made two points to her; one being that I read that book at that age and that even if it is a harder book than he is used to, it would be a great learning experience.

Do you think this is too much book for a second grader?
Or, more generally; it is good to push tough books on kids and help them through the hard words, or does it backfire?

Please note: He already reads at an advanced level (3rd - 4th grade).

If he's already a good reader for his age, and if he's willing, it's fine, you can at least try it.
I think there should be a balance between easy reading and hard reading in a child's reading, the first to build pleasure and confidence, the second to build skill. So, it is also good for him to read easier books that he enjoys.
Many adults nowadays never read for pleasure. This is unfortunate; they're missing a lot. There are various reasons, but one reason may be that in school they are forced to read too much that they didn't enjoy.
So, use your judgment.

I don't think it's too much. I know if my teachers didn't challenge me and had me read on my "suggested" level I wouldn't have been as advanced as I was. In fact, I probably would have been bored and lost interest. I was reading The Little Prince, the infamous Captain Underpants, Goosebumps and finally, Nancy Drew by age 8.

i love that book. not too much pressure though kids are hard on themselves these days when it comes to pleasing their parents in the education department. but i do understand your point if he is an advanced reader why not encourage him instead of setting him back
