Female birds lay eggs with or without a mate. Note having a mate however guarantees that the egg is not fertile and will not hatch. You need to leave the egg in there for her to lay on as long as she wants. Once she stops laying on it, you can remove it. If you were to remove it now she would just keep laying and laying which is very stressful for them and can even kill them.

Yes all female birds can lay eggs without a male.
My female cockatiel is 8 years old and she is sitting on 3 eggs with no mate.
Done this 3 times now ever since she was 7 years old.

The answer is yes female birds can and will lay eggs without a mate. I have a female quaker parrot and she lays eggs and sits on them. When she gets off them the best thing to do is get rid of the egg/s. I called the pet store when this first happened ;) and thats what they said.

Perhaps they did stop fighting long enough for a little nookie!!
Seriously, I'd talk to a vet, or the local humane society. My budgie laid an egg once, she did have a mate. But it broke on the bottom of the cage. :-(

Do you only ovulate (have an egg) if you have a mate? The eggs are produced even if they don't get fertilized.

Yes, just like chickens or any bird. The egg will be unfertilized and will not hatch.

The egg is the end result of ovulation. Her ovaries don't know that there is no mate.
