My credit score is "good" and my fiances is "poor". I would like to keep mine in good standing. Will his poor credit affect mine? He has alot of past due medical bills and child support. Everyone tells me when I we get married my credit will get crappy because of his, is this true??

No, this is not true. His accoutns ARE NOT 'added' to yours.

The part where people think that is often they get accounts together or one cosigns for the other in order to get an account, and then one of the spouses doesn't pay things on time-- or during a divorce the joint account doesn't get paid.

A good thing for you to do to help his credit is add him to all your credit cards as "Authorized user". They'll send you a card in his name but you can cut it up. Most credti card companies will actually report YOUR good history on his credit. (Not all....but a lot of them do). So you're essentially adding a good account to his credit.

You might want a nice discussion about how you guys can clean up his credit and get things moving ina godo direction--- if you want to buy a house together this will be very important.

Your credit will still be good as long as you keep it that way. But when you go to buy something together like a house or car, his credit will be taken into consideration and if it is poor, it could keep you from buying the product.

no not at all. just make sure that every one pulls a separate credit report on you and all his old bills will not have an effect on you. But just remember that anything you buy jointly will show up on both files. So make sure you pay on time and you will be fine. You may also take another look at this man. Open your eyes! If he has back child support owing and medical bills then he shirks responsibility and please understand this---leopards do not change their spots. There is a flaw in that character.

No, your credit will stay the same. Only now when you open joint accounts, items will be reported on your credit as well as his.
