Firstly, like most have stated already, you should really be sticking to the meds that you are prescribed and having sessions with your psychiatrist. Although I will say that not all meds work as well for some as they do for others. I know that you may feel that you can self medicate and/or that you don't really need them but the truth of the matter is, you do need them. However, if you really are intent about not taking your meds here are a few things to keep in mind

1. Think before you speak. I know that this sounds like common sense, but I know that it is harder for bi-polar people to 'slow down' especially when manic. So if someone says something that you immediately take offense to. Stop and count to five and think about what they have just said. This will give you time to sort out the info that you just received and can allow you to reply in a calm manner.

2. Manage your temper. This means if something is really starting to set you off you need to take control of your emotions. So walk away go to the next room or whatever, so again you give yourself time to sort through your thoughts.

3. Realize that nothing is as bad as it seems. Generally, your first impressions about any thing that conflicts with you is that it is really, really bad, but more often than not things are not as horrible as they seem. Keep this thought in mind.

Now that I've offered a few ideas, I would like to reemphasize the fact that you really need to talk to your doctor about how you feel about medication and maybe work out some psychological ways to manage your moods.

Did the doctor get you off of the meds, or did you take it upon yourself to stop taking them? I would bet that you decided you were "well" and didn't need it anymore. Most bipolars do that. It's classic. The fact is you have a disease that's not your fault. If you have a cut, you put a bandaid on it. If you break a leg, you go to the hospital and have a cast put on it. If you have a mental disorder you take your medication and enjoy your life and stop making everyone around you miserable because of your refusal to believe that you are controlling yourself. You are not. You are torturing everyone who loves you. Go back to the doctor and get yourself straight and stop playing games. It won't work. You will be lonely and angry for your whole life if you don't. Godloveya.

I'm not trying to be a smart *** here, but maybe you need to be back on your meds. Bipolar disorder is a common thing anymore and it's nothing to take lightly. It is managed easily with medications. These medications are needed for the rest of ones life usually. So please, if you feel like you are becoming unravelled, get back to the doctor and have him put you back on your medicine. If you are bipolar then you just can't stop taking the medication because you feel like you are better and can do without it. If you are bipolar, then you will most likely need to be on medications the rest of your life.

Back on the meds for you, I'm afraid. I have learned the hard way that I can't do without mine.

i thought maybe i had it because i am always really angry, extremely depressed, and/or occasionally excited. the psychologist told me if it was things that set off my mood and not just random changes, it probably wasn't bi polar, rather, a deeper affliction (i.e. depression). i've tried punching walls which resulted in literally bloody knuckles - not attractive, but effective until you need a cast or metal pins. now, when i freak out about something, i rely on one thing only... Everyone needs a little help once in a while. Maybe your doctor can give you something for those moments. I take Risperdal like one would take asprin for a headache - only when I need it.
