YOU WILL NEED A VALID (ONE THAT IS NOT EXPIRED) GOVERNMENT ISSUED ID. TRY GOING TO YOUR LOCAL DMV (DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES OR SECRETARY OF STATE OFFICE) FOR A STATE ID. IN ILLINOIS YOU CAN GET THEM THE SAME DAY YOU GO TO THEIR OFFICE.
IF YOUR ID IS EXPIRED YOU MOST LIKELY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET THRU SECURITY OR BOARD THE PLANE.
GOOD LUCK,
DODA

Typically, you need some sort of a government issued valid ID. The gate agent may not notice that it's expired, but you'll probably be violating laws if you use it. And, if the gate agent on the other end notices then you may not be able to get back. Call and ask what the leeway is in this situation and for goodness sake, get a passport!

You need a passport. and yes, you have to have a valid license to get a passport. Especially with all the chaos and security problems going on here right now. You may have to push your flight back until you get all this cleared up. Good luck and safe flying.

With all the new security measures, you are going to want to make sure you're allset! I would call the airline and call the American Embassy to make sure you have everything you need. You wouldn't want to live out that movie "The Terminal", its very possible you won't make it out of JFK if you aren't legit! Good luck! Have a safe flight!

Last time I flew (last month) I gave them my expired drivers licence by mistake, since I just got the new one, few days before the trip, and they were not taking it.
They do require it for travel, so better call them and make sure what documents they accept as ID.
