zero, that number which, when added to any number, leaves the latter unchanged; its symbol is 0. The introduction of zero into the decimal system was the most significant achievement in the development of a number system in which calculation with large numbers was feasible.
Without it, modern astronomy, physics, and chemistry would have been unthinkable as we know them. The lack of such a symbol was one of the serious drawbacks of Greek mathematics. Its existence in the West is probably due to the
Arabs, who, having obtained it from the Hindus, passed it on to European mathematicians in the latter part of the Middle Ages.
The Maya of Central America and probably the Babylonians also invented zero.

These number systems evolved somewhat during the Middle ages with the notable addition by the Hindus of a convenient notation for zero and negative numbers, concepts which previously had been difficult to deal with due to the lack of notation. The properties of the "real number system" (consisting of both rational and irrational numbers) began to be understood in the 1600's with the development of calculus, and by the end of the 1800's mathematicians such as Dedekind and Cantor were giving rigorous mathematical definitions of this number system, putting it on equal footing with the whole numbers and rational numbers.

The first culture to expressly use a glyph meaning 0 as a placeholder meaning 'nothing here' was the Aztecs.
The reason the Hindus get the credit is not for first invention but because their culture is the one who's concept managed to influence Europe.
It's as if two people independantly invented the telephone a few weeks apart, but the first one fell ill with the flu and was a week too late getting the patent in with the patent office because the other person got the patent application in first. (true story)
