My students aren't believing that soft dinosaur tissue is 70 million years old. How can I explain it?

Simply explain to them that this is the best answer science currently has to offer, that there is credible evidence to support it, and therefore it is not unreasonable for them to believe what they read in their texts.

Radiocarbon dating is based on the unproveable assumption that the isotope degenerates at a constant rate. That assumes that the atmosphere of the earth of millions of years ago is and has always been what it is now.

Even in relatively recent history, we have seen changes in the ozone. What other changes may have occurred that science had no knowledge of 100 years ago, much less a million years or more?

The Bible discribes such a drastic change back at the flood of Noah. If you are teaching them that evolution is true, then you are indeed teaching a lie. If you are teaching them that it is a yet unproven theory, then you're not.

(The Bible also discribes dinosaurs in Job 41, and that book is no more than 6 or 7 thousand years old.)

Tell them to ignore the religious propaganda.

There is more than enough evidence to support the fact that dinosaurs lived 65 million years ago. This isn't a one-off case but it isn't enough to 'debunk' the already well known facts.

Unfortunately, it does seem to remain a mystery as to how the tissue is preserved. I can't find anything relating to it apart from Creationist junk and science magazines that don't question the facts.

very interesting! My dad told me a story of a man a long time ago who had owned a cow that died. He buried it in his yard. later when someone was excavating the site and found these bones they had people come in and date them and those people put them together in the shape of a dinosaur and dated them for millions of years old.
kinda makes you wonder if creationists have it right after all. (if God made man in His image don't you think that they were fairly intelligent beings, they probably had gene splicing down to an art form)

I would wait to teach about this singular finding until scientists have come to difinitive and peer accepted conclusions. That is how science works, you don't jump in with any new finding until it has been throught out and through at length.

I suppose it looks as though the creationists will glom onto this, though.

to begin. they arent actually 70 million years old scientists have tried their hand at carbon dating a creature that was still alive and only succeeded in proving that the creature was over 60,000 years old. thus carbon dating has been disproven however not wanting their years of work, explanations and theories to go out the window this has been denied as any plausable evidence that carbon dating does not work.

the truth is dinosaurs did exist however they coexisted with man before the flood of noah. they were amalgamations of the creatures god had origionally designed because of sin they were a mutation of their former selves.

before letting this get out of hand god had told noah to whipe out the sinners and these species which he did not change himself (sin had changed the creatures man had desired strange flesh) he was going to cause a flood. thus destroying most of the amalgamations if you read in genesis it also states that all living creatures were once vegitarian(they had never eaten meat before origional sin) genesis 1:29-30 NIV
