My vote would be for Queenstown for a honeymoon. Lots to do and see and lovely places to stay.

?? Who told you that? Christchurch is a pretty typical city, a bit like a small version of London without as much glitz. I lived in Christchurch for nearly 2-years and cannot think of one thing to tell you to do for a honeymoon off hand. They do the little gondola rides through town and their is the Antarctic Center near the airport but not really romantic.
For romantic, Kaikoura is the first that comes to mind. Beautiful quiet quaint town a few hours North of Christchurch at the tip of the South Island. Lots to do there depending on the season...whale watching, swim with dolphins, shark diving, seal diving, visit the seal colony, horseback riding, fly a plane (with instruction but cheap).
For a honeymoon in NZ, this is what I recommend. Fly in and get a car, then Start in Kaikoura and stay at least 2-days doing things there, then drive down the coast thru Christchurch (stop on return trip), continue South thru Oamaru & the boulders to Dunedin, stop at the tourist centre and get a map & directions for the Otago Penninsula drive, have dinner and stay overnight, maybe do one of the penguin tours that evening or the next morning (Twilight Tours)...continue south and complete the Otago drive, this should be a romantic thing to do together, lots of beautiful places to see and stop along the way including almost deserted beach areas, you may need to take 2-days to complete this drive so stay overnight at an in between town or do the trip at a faster pace for one day...end up in Queenstown. If you enjoy adrenalin activities like bungee, speed boats, parasailing, plan on 2-days there and possibly a day trip to Franz Josef otherwise 1-day is enough. Drive back over to Christchurch and spend a day..this is assuming you fly into CC and need to drop the car there and fly out the next day. --- If you have some extra time, I would say to fly into Auckland and drive south stopping at Rotorua and the Waitomo Caves. Take the ferry across to the South Island to Kaikoura, then same as above. -- You could go the opposite direction too if you are really into nature & activities like kayaking, leaving from Kaikoura head West through the moutains and then south, this will be a beautiful drive. Get to Queenstown, do the penninsula drive from QT to Dunedin, then up to Christchurch.
Hope some of that helps :-)

Christchurch is perfect for a honeymoon. There is no reason to leave your hotel.
There are much nicer places in NZ, as the first answer points out.
