It means that they are saying what every generation says. "Things have never been this bad, the end is near". Those who study history know that it has often been much much worse than it is today. The end is only a day closer today than it was yesterday.

There are many prophecies in the bible that are coming true today.
From the Book of Psalms, Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc, to Jesus' words in Matt 24, Luke 21, Mark 13
and the book of Revelation.
Looking at a newspaper is seeing the fulfillment of 2 Tim 3: 1-6

Usually they mean that the revelations of the apocalypse are manifesting...
I wouldn't take this too seriously though. People have been talking about and expecting the 'end of the world' for as long as they've been writing and transmitting history. As for the Millenialists,
a thousand years ago they thought it was all ending. And with the Black Death descending on Europe and the Holy Roman Empire fragmenting, it seemed likely. But those times passed. As will the current set of alarming bad times.
It is in the nature of people to feel alarmed and
ill fated.

God promises have been shown to be true in the past, present and now our future. He has revealed to us the end times and warned us to be prepared. It will happen fast and is near. We aren't sure when it will happen because that isn't a known privilege, but we know it will. That should be enough to prepare each one of us. God will not let us down nor does He mince words, what He says will happen. Everyone has a choice in life, that is the absolute ground rules of free will. You also have a choice to what place your free will will take you.
