I have been to NYC once and I stayed in the Metro Hotel, which was a 3* hotel. The room was on the small side and was basic but clean.
The location was great it was on 45 West 35th Street within walking distance of a sub way, Macy's and other big stores. The Empire state was within walking distance and you had a great view of it from the roof terrace at the Hotel. Time Square and Madison Sq gardens is a 5-10 minute walk.
Check out trip advisor for reviews of the hotel.
If you wanted luxury and to blow the budget then either The Waldorf towers in Midtown Manhattan or Essex House in Central Park. Hope this has helped!

Depends whether you want to be in the middle of all the action of Times Square, if you do then the Marriott Marquis is hard to beat, for something up near Central Park, then the Jumeirah Essex House. Or a personal favourite is the 70 Park Avenue, this is a fairly small 5* Hotel in a really quiet posh area but is only a 10 minute walk to Times Square.

Have stayed at The Mansfield Hotel on 44th and 5th. Central to absolutely everything. Walking distance to St Patricks Cathedral, Central Park, Empire State, Time Square. Reasonably priced.

I stayed at the Crown Plaza Broadway and it was pretty good amenities wise, but the best location to walk to Broadway shows and it is on Times Squares, so if you go there on New Years Eve is the best location.
Is also whithin walking distance to to shopping in 5th avenue, Empire state building and many other things.

Whilst it may not be a 5* hotel - I thought that Hotel Edison on 47th & Broadway was fantastic.

Why waste your money on a swanky hotel..after all, you're only going to be in the room to shower sh*t and sleep!
With this in mind, all rooms in New York are small and functional.
