There are cleaning services that specialize in this - check your yellow pages. I also highly recommend having the air ducts cleaned and replacing all the filters, don't forget to have the window screens cleaned and the vent over the stove thoroughly washed. If you do remove and replace the carpet be sure they remove and replace the pad over a freshly cleaned surface. Most carpet companies will tell you the pad is fine or cleaning underneath is not important but depending on the severity of your allergies this can be huge. Personally i went with all hard flooring - wood, tile and linoleum so I can keep it clean and I knew for sure the pet hair was gone.

Yes to the carpet! Or you can have it cleaned with hypoallergic treatment. Change any filters like in the air conditioner to hypoallergic and have the ductwork cleaned. Thoroughly clean the home of course and check out the vents on the appliances if there are any. Don't forget the windows and sills. What you are allergic to is not the hair, it's the protien that accumulates on pet hair from saliva that turns to dander. Dander is very fine; you can't see it and it's in the homes and air all of the time. Good luck! Godloveya.

You're not allergic to animal hair, that's impossible or you'd be allergic to your own hair.
What you're allergic to is the animal DANDER, the tiny pieces of skin that is shed along with the hair.
You need to clean the ductwork in the house, change furnace filters to "hypo" filters such as Scotchbrand "Filtreat." and have all the carpeting thoroughly and professionally shampooed.
If you tell the carpet cleaning company to clean specifically because you're allergic, they'll use hypo allergenic shampoos designed to release most pet hair from the carpeting.

I would rent a steam cleaner and go over all of the carpeted areas, mop (maybe even two or three times) the non-carpeted areas. Your best bet would be to fully change the carpets, but I understand when moving into a new home, you may not be able to change the carpet right away.
